Tamaiti Healthy Homes
Creating HEALTHier HOMES FOR CANTERBURY FAMILIES
Did you know that a warm, dry home can prevent illness, especially for children?
Tamaiti Healthy Homes is a free service that ensures homes are warm, dry and healthy. Whether you own your own home or rent, we’re here to help.
Working in partnership with Te Puāwaitanga ki Ōtautahi Trust, we work alongside families to develop a housing assessment that may identify improvements, such as improved draft control or heating. Our service is free, and many of the improvements and interventions we suggest are too.
To be eligible for our service there must be a tamaiti aged 19 years or younger, (residing or regularly visiting) or a pregnant māmā in the whare.
If you or a family you know may benefit from a housing assessment visit, please get in touch by making a referral or calling 0800 PASIFIKA (727 434).
How we support you
Whether you are a homeowner or tenant, we can assess your home and work with you to come up with a plan for a healthier home. Here’s how it works:
We meet with you to discuss your housing situation and goals for wellbeing.
Together we create a Healthy Home Action Plan that will help you achieve your goals and keep your family healthy.
We work with you (and your landlord) to make improvements, such as installing smoke alarms, providing better heating solutions, or fixing draughty spaces.
Our Stories
The Fifita family
We sat down with Ana Fifita and her kāinga, who shared about their journey with rheumatic fever and how a warmer, drier home has improved their health.
The Fanene family
Mulipola Fanene, living with her daughter and three granddaughters, used to deal with cold and mould problems. Now, the kids are much healthier.
