Smashing Records

We had our Pasifika Fitness challenge in April and what an incredible buzz this was!

More than 900 people came along and had a go at our physical activity classes during March. It was amazing to see so many of you there!

Our registered nurse, Suli Tuitaupe says it was a slow start at level 2 with a few classes having to be cancelled - but then it took off.

“We had 10 classes each week, with something on every day, which encouraged people to make physical activity part of their daily routine.”

There were four to five classes with outstanding performances – Island Dance Beats, Pacific Zumba, and Pacific Ocean aqua aerobics.

“It was great to see individual growth and lots of people trying new things – especially older people giving aqua aerobics a go,” says Suli.

Not only are we helping our community get fitter, healthier and happier, we broke records and had fun doing it.

Last year 105 people joined us for Siva Samoa, and 65 turned up for the grand finale the Celebration class. This year more than 100 came along to our final Thursday Island beats class, and over 200 at our final Saturday class.

We couldn’t have done it without the help of our coaches, Sina, Pele, Mena, Darren, Sem, Allamanda and all our Tangata Atumotu crew who helped organise the events.

“A special meitaki maata to the Christchurch City Council crew and Flow Hot Yoga Christchurch for all your support,” says Suli.

Tangata Atumotu have been asked by church groups and other organisations to come and share health messages and run an Island Beats class.

Plans are underway for another Pasifika Fitness Challenge in November, but Suli hints there maybe more classes to come before then.

We’re looking at running some Zoom yoga classes and some aqua aerobics classes over winter.

"I’m so proud to be able to be part of an organisation that continues to give passionately to the needs of our community.”
